Handlebar weights have been attached to the handlebar ends of motorcycles since the 1980s in order to reduce higher-frequency natural vibrations. In addition to motorcycles, they are also used on the handlebars of work machines .

Components on vehicles and machines have natural vibrations that are stimulated by the engine, chassis or the course of the road. In contrast to a tuning fork , the natural vibrations of a handlebar tube are not limited to one frequency, but repeat themselves periodically. At different frequencies, for example at different engine or wheel speeds, the handlebar tube swings in different directions. Handlebar weights mounted on the tube ends shift the natural vibration into lower-frequency areas. The higher the attached weight, the lower the frequency of the tube that can be excited.

Is the handlebar not properly balanced or z. B. installed the wrong weight, this can lead to the motorcycle being pulled to the heavier side. In addition to reducing vibrations perceived as unpleasant , handlebar weights also reduce the risk of material fatigue in the handlebar tube.
