Lenkwerk, the former air force clothing office of the Wehrmacht

The Lenkwerk (formerly the Air Force Clothing Office of the Wehrmacht ) is a listed building in Bielefeld in the Mitte district .

history

The building was erected in 1938 by the Reich Ministry of Aviation as an Air Force Clothing Office according to plans by the Wuppertal architect Peter Klotzbach . From 1945 to 1992 the British Army of the Rhine used it as a warehouse for weapons, ammunition, fuel, medical equipment and other items. The building was first called Brixton Barracks and later Richmond Barracks . In 1994 the steering mechanism was placed under monument protection due to its characteristic design language.

After the army withdrew, the use of the area remained unclear. At times there were plans to set up the central campus for the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences here. An investor acquired the property in 2010 and put it to commercial use.

Today, the Lenkwerk is best known for the vintage car museum of the same name as well as for trade and workshops for classic automobiles. Today, the Lenkwerk also houses commercial and event space as well as a restaurant.

Of the three clothing offices of the Luftwaffe in Berlin from 1936, in Sonneberg from 1937 and in Bielefeld from 1938, the Lenkwerk was the second new building after the clothing office in Sonneberg. The large building complex in Sonneberg was used by Piko after the war as a government office and from 1963 as a business premises . Unlike the Lenkwerk , the Sonneberg buildings were not listed as a monument after the fall of the Wall and were demolished in 2003.
