The lenticular galaxy Messier 102

A lenticular galaxy or lenticular galaxy is in the galaxy classification an intermediate type between spiral and elliptical galaxies : they are disk galaxies (like spiral galaxies), but most of their interstellar matter consumed or lost (like elliptical galaxies). Because of their shortened arms, it is difficult to distinguish between elliptical galaxies when viewed from above.

Hubble classifications of lenticular galaxies are S0 and SB0 . The de Vaucouleurs classification adds SA0 , SAB0 .
