Leo Baeck Fellowship Program

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Leo Baeck Fellowship Program is an international scholarship program launched in 2005 for doctoral students to research the history and culture of German-speaking Judaism in Central Europe and in emigration.

The annual scholarships are awarded regardless of the nationality or the country of the university attended and are intended to enable research stays worldwide. In addition to financial support, a central concern of the program is to promote the exchange with other young researchers in the field of German-Jewish history.

The program is named after Rabbi Dr. Leo Baeck (1873–1956), the last rector of the College for the Science of Judaism and last chairman of the Reich Association of Jews in Germany . The Leo Baeck Fellowship Program was initiated by the Remembrance, Responsibility and Future Foundation in 2005. The German National Academic Foundation runs the program in cooperation with the Leo Baeck Institute London and with financial support from the Remembrance, Responsibility and Future Foundation , the Robert Bosch Foundation , the Alfred Freiherr von Oppenheim Foundation and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation . From 2009 the funding of the program will be taken over by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). During the program year, the scholarship holders come together for two seminars where they discuss their work with other scientists. Twelve doctoral scholarships are awarded in each academic year.
