History as a place of learning

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The educational institution Lernort Geschichte (from 2007-2016 lernort Gedenkstätte) in Stuttgart provides historical and political education on the history of the 20th century for young people and young adults. The focus of the work is the confrontation with National Socialism .

history

In 1952 the first youth center opened its doors in Stuttgart. The starting point was the realization that a meeting place for young people was urgently needed in war-torn Stuttgart, not least to counteract the national socialist tendencies that still existed. The employees in the youth centers faced this difficult challenge and in the following years supported the confrontation with the National Socialist mass crimes and the coming to terms with the past. The approaches were not always the same, each time required its own measures.

Since 2007, the Jugendhaus Gesellschaft has been addressing the question of what tasks the youth house society has to face today in commemorating and dealing with National Socialism in order to meet the requirements of the current discourse on remembrance politics such as historical-political education work with its institution, history as a place of learning (until 2017 learning place memorial).

Here offers of historical-political education for young people and young adults are realized. Current issues of political education, which require special attention in school as well as open youth work, such as education for an active understanding of democracy, standing up against extremism, anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia and xenophobia, are taken into account. The educational concept was developed together with specialists from science and research and with specialist didactics from the mediation work of memorials and other extracurricular educational institutions.

Educational work

The offers of Lernort Geschichte are based on the needs of young people, the programs are therefore largely developed by volunteer young people and with their support the practical work is implemented on site.
