location

The museum was located in the building of the Swabian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) in Stettenstrasse (Augsburg train station and Bismarck district).

Emergence

The museum was created after the artist's major retrospective in 1992 in the Augsburg armory . Lettl had agreed to give his pictures to the city of Augsburg on permanent loan , provided that the city made suitable rooms available.

Some citizens founded the Association for the Promotion of Surreal Art , which today has over 100 members. He finally found what he was looking for. On the occasion of its 150th anniversary, the IHK Schwaben decided to make the atrium of the IHK Academy available for Wolfgang Lettl's pictures. The financial structure of this museum was unique for Bavaria: the IHK provided the rooms free of charge, the association was responsible for the interior, advertising as well as for regular campaigns and special exhibitions.

The opening took place on June 15, 1993.

exhibition

The Lettl Atrium showed 168 exhibits from the years 1963 to 1992. Parts of the exhibition were in the seminar rooms. Young people in particular were confronted with art. Admission to the permanent exhibition was free during the opening hours of the Chamber of Commerce. There were various special exhibitions on this.

As eye-catchers in the outside and inside area of the Lettl atrium, sculptures by Florian Lettl - the artist's son - were exhibited, which vividly take up the motifs of Wolfgang Lettl.

closure

Due to renovation and renovation work, the exhibition closed on December 20, 2013. In the following years, a new exhibition location for Lettl's pictures was sought and created. On December 18, 2019, the Lettl Museum opened for the 100th birthday of Wolfgang Lettl in Zeuggasse in the center of Augsburg.
