The Barra lighthouse (Portuguese: Farol da Barra ) - official name Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra - is a lighthouse at the entrance to All Saints Bay in Salvador in Brazil .

location

The lighthouse is located in the Barra district on the southern tip of a peninsula which separates All Saints Bay from the Atlantic and marks the narrow point of the Ponta de Santo Antônio strait between this peninsula and the island of Itaparica . It is surrounded by the Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra, built in 1698, from which it also got its official name.

history

Today's lighthouse was built in 1839, but the striking elevation has been used as a guide when entering the port of Salvador since the 16th century. With the construction of the fort in its current form at the end of the 17th century, the first lighthouse was built, which is considered the oldest in South America.

building

The 22-meter-high, conical tower has a lantern top and a gallery; the painting consists of horizontal stripes in black and white color.

light

The light, 39 meters above sea level, emits the color sequence white, out, white, out, red, in a five-second rhythm.

particularities

The popularity of the lighthouse is explained by the fact that it is one of the few places in Brazil where you can watch a sunset in the sea; In addition, a small nautical museum, the Museu Náutico da Bahia , and a cafeteria were set up in the fort .
