Leukostasis (from ancient Greek λευκός leukós , German 'white' and στάση stáse , German 'place, attitude' ) is a medical term . It is understood as the sticking ( adhesion ) of leukocytes to the wall of blood vessels . Biochemically, the adhesion is mostly mediated by ICAM-1 . Leukostases usually occur together with extreme leukocytosis , which is often caused by leukemia . The consequences are mostly microcirculation disorders and depend on the organ affected. B. respiratory failure is a consequence of leukostasis in the lungs. With leukostasis in the brain, neurological failures occur. Diagnostically important in leukemia is priapism , in leukostasis in the genitals.
