Leverone is a small fraction of the municipality of Borghetto d'Arroscia in the province of Imperia and has about 80 inhabitants.

history

According to local tradition, Leverone is said to have been founded by a Tommaso Chinaldo around the year 1300. He is said to have moved away from there in order to build his own house on the other side of the river in the locality Mele (apples) on a small, flat plot of land at a small spring. It seems that the first inhabitants of the Mele were plagued by ants and that they have therefore looked for a sunnier and also level place to build new homes higher up. Others followed Chinaldo over the years and so numerous houses were built until the place grew to 16 families and called itself "Villa of the Sixteen".

The place then had different names. After he had finally achieved a certain urban form and had become independent from Aquila d 'Arroscia, he called himself Leverone (from levau = separated). Under Napoleonic rule, the place received its present form at the beginning of the 19th century.

Festivals, fairs and celebrations

The first religious festival was that of the Madonna del Carmine , which is celebrated on July 16 and the following Sunday. Occasionally neighboring parishes also take part in Vespers. Another, even more strictly religious festival is that of St. Bernardo di Chiaravalle , patron and namesake of the church. On August 20th the religious celebrations will take place in his honor. On the following Saturday and Sunday, the Pro-Loco Leverone di 'Sagra della Buridda (Stockfish)' and a national boccia festival (Gara Bocciofila a coppie), which is an official competition within the Italian Boccia Federation. It is accompanied by a range of games and gastronomy (lunch and dinner) for young and old.
