Levy & Müller

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Levy & Müller publishing house (later: Herold-Verlag ) was founded in Stuttgart in 1871 by Maximilian Levy and Wilhelm Müller. Initially without a specific programmatic direction, from 1895 the publisher turned mainly to youth books . In the years between 1900 and 1945 the publishing house was one of the leading youth publication publishers in the German-speaking area.

history

Beginning around 1926, the publishing house's youth book program appeared under the name “Herold-Bücher”. In 1933 the publisher, which in the meantime only published books for young people, was renamed Herold-Verlag.

Because of its Jewish roots, Herold-Verlag had to be forcibly sold by the owner family in 1936. The buyer was the Christian publishing house in Stuttgart. The owners emigrated to the USA in 1938 and 1941 respectively.

In 1944, the Herold publishing house burned down almost completely in a bomb attack on Stuttgart. After the war, the Christian publishing house had to return Herold-Verlag to its owners. Since they did not want to return to Germany, they sold the Herold-Verlag in 1951 to a Stuttgart lawyer. This let the Herold-Verlag continue to operate unchanged and it remained with the pure youth book program.

In 1978 the Herold-Verlag was sold to the Ravensburger Verlag Otto Maier, from where it came into the possession of the Schwend printing company in Fellbach near Stuttgart in 1980 . In 1993 it was sold again to the Meisinger / Middelhauve publishing group in Munich. There it only existed as one of the publishing group's numerous labels, with books mainly for toddlers and preschoolers.

Until 2002 books were still published under the Herold label. In 2004 the aforementioned Munich publishing group was finally taken over by Beltz-Verlag in Weinheim. Since then, no new books have appeared under the name Herold.
