lexiCan is a product of the German vetafab Software GmbH. The Windows-based wiki software is used to create personal or company-wide knowledge databases . It has been marketed as a solution for individual users (staff) since 2005. A client-server edition that enables simultaneous access by several users (Business Edition) has been available since summer 2010.

Areas of application

The use of the wiki software is generally suitable for all subject areas on which knowledge is to be collected, organized and passed on. For example, lexiCan is used as a company wiki , project database , knowledge base or for the systematic evaluation of research.

Functions

lexiCan makes it possible to collect, structure, network and process large amounts of multimedia content on a topic and prepare it for further use.

lexiCan organizes knowledge in knowledge areas and divides them into articles. An article can be freely compiled from texts, images and tables. A powerful text editor is available for this, which is just as easy to use as a word processor . The insertion of existing information sources is supported by import functions for numerous file formats (DOC, DOCX, PDF, RTF, TXT and HTML). Entire folder structures can also be imported (only lexiCan Personal).

The free setting of references to other articles, web addresses, files, sources and folders in an article allows the knowledge stored in lexiCan to be effectively networked. Drag and drop functions, multi-function bars and context menus are available to the user for this purpose .

lexiCan provides a complete structuring function that also allows multiple assignments of articles. In addition to the structure view, an alphabetical index of all titles, an overview of all integrated images and files, as well as a full-text search of all contents of a knowledge area including file attachments are available for finding content. A dynamic filter in the article index supports the quick retrieval of individual articles.

The integrated source management prevents the redundant entry of references and lists all entries to which the respective sources are assigned.

Contents can be exported / converted into various file formats (DOC, DOC, PDF, RTF, TXT and HTML), the Microsoft Help format , into a folder structure corresponding to the structure and into an HTML format for publication on websites.

The user interface is multilingual (German, English).

Unlike many open source-based wiki solutions , the commissioning and use of lexiCan does not require any special knowledge of, for example, HTML, SQL or PHP. The use of lexiCan does not require any extensive training and is also quite easy for technically less experienced users. The client-server edition lexiCan Business offers a differentiated user and rights management with its own GUI (lexiCan Administrator). Access control can also take place via an existing Active Directory via an interface. The lexiCan + WEB supplement is available for lexiCan Business. The technology based on Microsoft Internet Information Services enables access to selected wikis of the lexiCan server via a web browser. Wikis created with lexiCan Business are published on the Internet or intranet without any intermediate steps.
