The love story of the beautiful Magelone and Count Peter von Provence is a story by the romantic Ludwig Tieck , published in 1797. It goes back to a model that was translated by Veit Warbeck from a French chivalric novel in 1527 (see The beautiful Magelone ). Ludwig Tieck wrote another drama in 1803 that remained unfinished.

Plot (story by Ludwig Tiecks)

The son of a count, Peter von Provence, moves away on the advice of a singer to get to know the world. In Naples he impressed the king's daughter Magelone as an unknown knight at the tournament. As the winner, he is allowed to sit across from her, they secretly exchange messages through their wet nurse, he visits her and gives her three rings. Her father wants to marry her to a famous knight and gives another tournament, but Peter wins again. He puts Magelone to the test, says he has to leave. She escapes with him. When she gets tired, they rest in the forest. A raven steals the three rings that Peter finds from the sleeping woman. When trying to fish her out of the water, Peter is driven out to sea in a boat. Pagans take him to the Sultan, where he becomes a respected gardener. When his daughter Sulima secretly wants to meet him, he flees and through Fischer comes straight to the meadow where Magelone lives with a shepherd. He tells her everything, she reveals herself. They are happy to travel to his parents. They are building a summer palace in the meadow.

Formal structure

Tieck decorates each of the 18 chapters with a song that is mostly sung by Peter. The first half brings the couple together (after three chapters he has left home, after six he gave her the ring, after nine it is clear that they are fleeing), the second half apart and together again (after twelve chapters they are separated , after 15 he comes back to Christians, in the last they find each other). The happiness found again at the end corresponds to the author's opening speech, which makes up the first chapter, about the transience of all happiness, which nevertheless recurs what the author also relates to his revival of the fairy tale.

Comparison with the original

According to Edward Mornin, Veit Warbeck's original text was shortened by Tieck in favor of the love story, many prayers and the like. deleted. The abandoned Magelon spins lonely in front of the idyllic shepherd's hut, instead of making a pilgrimage to Rome and founding a hospital and a church. The language in the original is more representational, Tieck often lets moods speak by describing the surroundings.

In his opus 33 , Johannes Brahms set texts from Ludwig Tieck's work under the title Fifteen Romances, Magelone Songs for Voice and Piano and dedicated the songs to the singer and vocal teacher Julius Stockhausen .
