detail

Lielvārdes josta ("the belt from Lielvārde ") is a traditional woven red and white belt with 22 ancient symbols that are not repeated over their entire length and that have been precisely passed on from generation to generation.

This belt is well known in Latvia and is worn on many occasions. These symbols as well as Dainas have not only inspired many Latvian artists, but certainly also the " Singing Revolution "; they are revered by many folklore enthusiasts and by the Dievturi religious community . Young and old try to decipher the enigmatic symbols, to "read" them. Sections of the belt pattern are depicted on the Latvian banknotes .

Several works of art and sculptures have already been placed in a lonely forest about six kilometers northwest of the village of Jaunsesava . They also include a mast-like wooden column around which a carved Lielvārdes josta - belt winds.
