Dievturi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dievturi , also Dievturība (»trust in God«; to Lat . Dievs »God« and turēt »hold«) is a neo-pagan religious community in Latvia . The community has around 8,000 members in Latvia, which corresponds to about 0.4% of the total population.

The basis of the Dievturi is formed by the orally transmitted Dainas and elements from folklore. The Dievturi "catechism" is the Teoforii catechism . There are also historical and archaeological sources.

The Dievturi movement was founded in 1925 by the artist, historian and archaeologist Ernests Brastiņš (1892–1942) and registered in 1926 by the then "Department for Spiritual Affairs" of the Republic of Latvia. After the Soviet occupation of Latvia, exiles founded several smaller Dievturi groups abroad. In 1990 the Dievturi was officially re-established by Eduards Detlavs (1919–1992).
