Ernests Brastiņš (born March 19, 1892 in Lielstraupe , † January 28, 1942 in the Soviet Union ) was a Latvian art historian and archaeologist who founded the neo-pagan religion Dievturi . His scientific research is now often judged to be speculative and unscientific.

Life

Brastiņš studied from 1911 to 1916 at the Stieglitz Art School in Saint Petersburg . During the First World War he took part in the Latvian War of Independence . After he became director of the War Museum in Riga in 1921 , he researched several prehistoric barrows and also collected the folk tales associated with them. He published his research results from 1923 to 1930 in the four-volume work Latvijas pilskalni . After the Soviet invasion of Latvia in 1940, he was arrested, deported and sentenced to death in December 1941. A month later, on January 28, 1942, he was executed.
