The company was founded in 1986 under the name Card Guard Scientific Survival Ltd. founded as a private stock corporation. Operations began in 1990.

In 1997 the company expanded into the United States and Japan. In 1999, the company went public on the SWX Swiss Exchange. The following year, Instromedix , a division of Alaris Medical Systems Inc. , a provider of telemedicine systems in the USA, took over. In the same year LifeWatch Inc. , a US provider of cardiac event monitoring, pacemaker and Holter services was acquired.

In 2001 the head office was relocated to Neuhausen am Rheinfall, Switzerland, directly near Schaffhausen . At the same time, Quality Diagnostic Services (QDS) , a US provider of cardiac event monitoring, was acquired and merged with LifeWatch.

In 2004 the company signed a multi-year strategic alliance with Samsung Electronics . The agreement provides that Card Guard will develop and manufacture various medical software applications and devices and sell them to Samsung Electronics. At the same time, LifeWatch entered into an exclusive contract with Guidant Corporation to provide various monitoring services for cardiac patients who have been implanted with Guidant ICD defibrillators .
