In the 15th century the Ligaba fulfilled the function of master of ceremonies. Later the Ligaba was given more responsibility. He then gave orders to the commanders in chief of the armed forces. For a long time only the emperor could appoint a ligaba who, as the monarch's confidante, was responsible for various matters at court, in the state and in the army. Traditionally, the Ligaba, comparable to a Lord Chamberlain of the Household , was considered one of the most honorable and most important dignitaries at the imperial court. A Ligaba was entitled to the military rank of Dejazmach .
