Dejazmach

Dejazmach ( Amharic ደጅአዝማች däǧʾäzmač [ dəd͡ʒʔəzmat͡ʃ ]; also Dejach ) is the oldest military dignitary and one of the oldest titles at the court of the emperors of Ethiopia . It means "commander of the troops at the door of the imperial tent" and comes from the time when the Ethiopian emperors did not yet have a permanent residence.

Function and privileges

The Dejazmach commanded the troops protecting the emperor's tent. Since around 1800 the title was usually one of the highest feudal lords of the empire . He had the right to up to twelve negarit , one negarit each standing for a province ruled by the Dejazmach. In the first place of the Dejazmach stood the ruler of the province of Begemdir . Later, the dignity of Dejazmach was connected to the rule over Sidamo and Bale .
