The transverse ligament of the first cervical vertebra ( ligamentum transversum atlantis ) is the main part of the cruciform ligament . It connects the two side parts of the atlas (Massae laterales). The fibers cross in the middle, which is why the tape is wider and thicker there. A layer of cartilage tissue is embedded in the ligament in the area of ​​the median articulatio atlantoaxialis of the second head joint. The cross band has a tensile strength of 350 N and can be overstretched up to 8 mm.
