The Elendsklamm is a rock gorge between the communities of Bruchmühlbach-Miesau and Martinshöhe in the Kaiserslautern district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

Name and story

The name Elendsklamm has nothing to do with misery in today's linguistic usage, but is derived from the old high German term "elilenti" , which was then used in a foreign country . This naming of the gorge indicates that the Elendsklamm was once a border area. In the Middle Ages it was on the Franconian regional borders of Wormsgau , Nahegau and Bliesgau as well as the dioceses of Metz , Mainz and Worms . In the 16th century, the Elendsklamm formed the border between the rule of Landstuhl of the noble family Sickingen and Pfalz-Zweibrücken as well as the Electoral Palatinate .

description

The three-kilometer-long Elendsklamm runs north-south from the Tausendmühle south of Bruchmühlbach-Miesau towards Martinshöhe. The gorge was formed by the Frohnbach, which flows through it from south to north, creating step-shaped cascades and bubbling waterfalls and finally flows into the Glan at Bruchmühlbach . Other scenic attractions of the Kerbtal are the bizarre weathering in quartz sandstone and overhanging layers of red sandstone .

natural reserve

In 2009 the Elendsklamm was declared a valuable biotope with rare biotope types and a high function for fauna and flora as a nature reserve. In addition to the low mountain range, the flora and fauna mainly consist of mixed oak and beech forest, which takes up most of the area, as well as ash canyon and debris forest. The protection goal of this biotope is the free development, so that a high biodiversity can be found here.

tourism

The Elendsklamm has well-developed hiking trails that follow the course of the Frohnbach. A section of the Palatinate Way of St. James also leads through the gorge.
