Lindwerder , also called Gatower Lindwerder , is an island that is located in the part of the Havel lakes belonging to the Berlin district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf .
The 2.2 hectare oval island of Lindwerder is the remainder of a former ice age moraine plate that was about three times the size . It is located around 200 meters from the east bank of the Havel am Grunewald , between Lieper Bay in the north and the Kleiner Steinlanke in the south. The names Lipa ( Slavic “Linde”) and Lanke (Slavic “small lake”) bear witness to the earlier Polabian settlement of the southwest of Berlin. The Linde is today with 56 copies of the most common tree on Lindwerder.
In 1888 Lindwerder was bought by the landowner Dr. Koch bought who eleven years later began building a house there. A cargo ferry was used to transport the building materials to the island. From 1905 the island could also be reached by public ferry . In the following years it developed into a popular destination. A dock for excursion boats was built on the west bank . In January 1912 Georg Heym , poet of Expressionism , drowned next to Lindwerder while ice skating in the Havel .
After the Second World War , large amounts of rubble were dumped on the east side of the island , enlarging the island by 3000 m² towards the mainland.
In 1956, the Müggelsee Lindwerder yacht club chose the location, which was expanded in the following years. Since 1971 there is a new restaurant building on the island. In addition to the private passenger ferry, which can be called with a bell, there is currently a cargo ferry for supply and disposal traffic.
