This is a list of the Chinese military districts ( Chinese  軍區  /  军区 , Pinyin Jūnqū ), the military districts of the People's Republic of China valid until December 31, 2015 . By order of Xi Jinping , the chairman of the Central Military Commission , the 7 military districts were merged into 5 "war zones" (战区, Pinyin Zhànqū ) with effect from January 1, 2016 .

Seven military districts

• Shenyang Military District ; Commander: Chang Wanquan ; Political Commissioner: Jiang Futang
• Beijing Military District ; Commander: Zhu Qi ; Political Commissioner: Fu Tinggui
• Lanzhou Military District ; Commander: Li Qianyuan ; Political Commissioner: Yu Linxiang
• Jinan Military District ; Commander: Fan Changlong ; Political Commissioner: Liu Dongdong
• Nanjing Military District ; Commander: Zhu Wenquan ; Political Commissioner: Lei Mingqiu
• Guangzhou Military District ; Commander: Liu Zhenwu ; Political Commissioner: Yang Deqing
• Chengdu Military District ; Commander: Wang Jianmin ; Political Commissioner: Liu Shutian
