    Stein was a pastor in Garching from 1906 until his death. A street is named after him.
  2. Josef Wagner (1856–1934)

    Awarded in 1926
    Wagner was born in Garching and was Mayor of Garching from 1888 to 1917. During his tenure, a central water supply, an electricity network and a new schoolhouse were built. He was made an honorary citizen for his forward-looking planning activities. A street in the town center is named after him.
  3. Johann Herrmann (1885–1955)

    From 1932 to 1954 Herrmann was a pastor in Garching. He was made an honorary citizen for his special contribution to community life.
  4. Rupert Angermair (1899-1966)

    Angermair was born in Garching. He held the chair for moral theology at the Philosophical-Theological University in Freising. The Professor Angermair Ring is named after him.
  5. Josef Amon (1899–1974)

    Amon, who comes from Franconia, was Mayor of Garching from 1952 to 1972. As a member of the Ödlandgenossenschaft and the Federal Committee for Fruit and Vegetables, he made services to agriculture. During his tenure, the industrial park was expanded and the first German nuclear research reactor was built. In 1981 Rathausstrasse was renamed after him.

    Karl was mayor of Garching from 1972 to 2002. During his tenure, the place changed from a rural community to a university town. Garching was connected to the Munich underground network and was further expanded as a university and research location.
  7. Theodor Hänsch (* 1941)

    Awarded in 2006
    Hänsch is director at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching. In 2005 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the development of laser-based precision spectroscopy.
