This list is a list of the Portuguese colonial governors (Governadores coloniais) of the Portuguese colony of Portuguese Guinea , now the independent Guinea-Bissau . The year numbers refer to the terms of office of the governors, the year numbers in italics show the de facto or continuing executive term of office of the governors.

From 1614 the Cacheu region belonged to the administrative area of ​​the also Portuguese island group Cape Verde , from 1692 Bissau was also part of it. From 1870 Bolama Portugal was awarded. From 1879 the Portuguese state merged the administration of the colonial areas of Bissau and Cacheu to form the Portuguese Guinea ( Guiné portuguesa ) and separated them from the administration of Cape Verde. From June 11, 1951, Portuguese Guinea became an "overseas province" ( Província Ultramarina) , from 1972 a "federal state". The PAIGC proclaimed unilateral independence from Portugal on September 24, 1973, which Portugal recognized on September 10, 1974 after the Carnation Revolution .
