Districts and quarters of Palermo
Palermo , the capital of the autonomous region of Sicily in Italy, is divided into 8 urban districts ( circoscrizioni ), which in turn are divided into a total of 34 districts (quartieri).
Legal basis
Art. 130 of Law 140/90 stipulates that all cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants must divide their urban area into city districts.
The City Council of Palermo, by resolution of December 6, 1995, January 24, 1996 and December 30, 1996, approved the Decentralization Decree, which divides the urban area of Palermo into eight districts.
Designations
The city districts are denoted by Roman numerals or ordinal numbers , e.g. B. "circoscrizione VIII" or "ottava circoscrizione". The neighborhoods have their own names.
The first district is the historic old town , the other districts are numbered counterclockwise starting in the south.
organs
Each individual district has the council and the president as institutional bodies .
The members of the council are elected in general elections at local elections. For its part, the Council elects the President and a Vice-President at its first meeting .
