The city of St. Gallen was protected by a city ​​wall in the Middle Ages . Since the city was expanded to include the Irer suburb, which is also called St. Mangen, there were initially six large gates in the city wall, with the Karlstor later a seventh was added, especially for the prince abbot. There was also at least one smaller gate in the wall and two gates within the city walls.
