List of stumbling blocks in Warendorf
The list of stumbling blocks in Warendorf documents all the stumbling blocks that have been laid in the city of Warendorf (core city and districts) as part of Gunter Demnig 's art and memorial project of the same name . The stumbling blocks are reminiscent of people who lived in Warendorf between 1933 and 1945 and who fell victim to National Socialism . The inscriptions on the small square brass plaques contain the names, the dates of life and the fate of the disenfranchised and persecuted, refugee and expelled, as well as abducted and murdered victims under National Socialism. The stumbling blocks are usually in the sidewalk in front of the house in which the person concerned last lived voluntarily.
In March 2011, a Stolperstein initiative was founded in Freckenhorst , and in January 2013 it was founded in Warendorf. The initiatives work out the personal and family histories of the persons concerned and establish contacts with survivors and descendants. Schools and churches, clubs and neighborhoods, individuals and groups of friends take on sponsorship for the stones; they remember the people from the past of their city and at the same time create places of remembrance in the present of their everyday world.
