List of viceroys of the Río de la Plata
The viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata was separated from the viceroyalty of Peru in 1776 and lasted until the provincial Unidas del Río de la Plata became independent . With the May Revolution on May 25, 1810, the independence movement declared the takeover of power by a local junta; the formal declaration of independence took place in the Congress of Tucumán on July 9, 1816.

The Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata had deposed the viceroy on May 25, 1810 and replaced it with a government junta, from this point onwards the Spanish colonial government was in fact at war with the independence movement and gradually lost its sphere of influence. The declaration of independence of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata by the Congress of Tucumán was recognized by Spain in 1816.
