Viceroy Margrave of Loreto

Nicolás Felipe Cristóbal del Campo y Rodríguez de Salamanca , Margrave of Loreto and Burgrave of San Nicolás , (born March 12, 1725 in Seville , Spain , † February 17, 1803 in Madrid , Spain) was a Spanish officer and colonial administrator who served as viceroy of the Río de la Plata .

Campo entered the service of the Spanish army as a cadet at a young age and took part in the campaigns in Portugal and the capture of Menorca . In 1763 he was promoted to regimental colonel ( Coronel ) and later took part in the Siege of Gibraltar (1779–1783) . He was awarded the title of margrave ( marqués ) of Loreto and burgrave ( vizconde ) of San Nicolás.

Appointed by King Charles III. , he officiated as successor to Juan José de Vértiz y Salcedos from March 7, 1784 to December 4, 1789 Viceroy of the Río de la Plata . He also became field marshal and chamberlain .

In Buenos Aires he reorganized the colonial administration according to the requirements of the crown. He expanded the postal service between Buenos Aires and the most important bases of the colony and brought colonists to Patagonia .

After the end of his tenure, he returned to Europe in 1790, where he died in 1803.
