List of the Grand Dukes of Baden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

After the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the new state of Baden arose from the areas on the right bank of the Rhine, the Electoral Palatinate, the Margraviate of Baden and the areas of the Hochstifte Constance, Speyer, Basel and Strasbourg. In 1805 it was expanded to include Constance, Breisgau and Ortenau. In 1806 the territories of the princes of Fürstenberg and Leiningen as well as parts of the monasteries Mainz and Würzburg were added. Margrave Karl Friedrich, who had ruled Baden-Durlach since 1738 and also in the Margraviate of Baden-Baden since 1771, became Elector of Baden in 1803 thanks to his good relations with Napoleon and the Russian Tsar and received the title of Grand Duke as head of state of Baden. His previous residence was the state capital of Baden. There were six grand dukes of Baden in total.
