List of German license plates with a classification according to categories

In the list of German license plates with a classification according to categories , many vehicle identification numbers of distinguishing signs valid in the Federal Republic of Germany, for which it was common to use the license plate to identify the vehicle category (e.g. passenger car, motorcycle, truck, trailer or tractor) to recognize listed. All of these listed classifications have now been abandoned by the licensing authorities, most recently in the Hohenlohekreis and Main-Spessart districts . The list is therefore primarily used for historical evidence.

The letters B, F, G, I, O and Q are (usually) ignored.

Abbreviations

Categories

The categories are abbreviated with capital letters:

• A: Followers
• AZ: trailers and tractors
• B: buses (if not listed, then for trucks)
• BA: buses and trailers
• K: Station wagons
• L: trucks
• LA: trucks and trailers
• LAZ: trucks, trailers and tractors
• Lf: delivery truck
• LfB: delivery vans and buses
• LZ: trucks and tractors
• M: motorcycles and scooters
• MA: motorcycles, scooters and trailers
• ML: motorcycles, scooters and trucks
• MLA: motorcycles, scooters, trucks and trailers
• MP: motorcycles, scooters and passenger cars
• MZ: motorcycles, scooters and tractors
• nP: all with the exception of passenger cars
• P: passenger cars
• PL: cars and trucks
• Sp: special vehicles (with excess length, excess width or special structure)
• W: caravan
• WSp: caravans and special vehicles
• Z: tractors

Exclamation mark

Sometimes there are one or more exclamation marks in a table. These indicate that this letter-number group is further subdivided. This is explained in more detail below.

Example:

In the case of the distinguishing mark AB for the city of Aschaffenburg, there is an exclamation mark in group b with the L and the N. These indicators from LA to LZ and NA to NZ are thus further subdivided. Among begins a series with the b and the subsequent letter L . This is the division of the license plates from LA to LZ . The first letters are then the first letters, those above are the second letters. The license plates with LA and LC in the example are trailers, those with LD are trucks, etc. The subdivision of the license plates from NA to NY follows in a new row below.

groups

The lower-case letters correspond to the allocation groups specified in Appendix 2 (to Section 8, Paragraph 1, Clause 4) of the Vehicle Registration Ordinance:

• Group a (formerly Ia ): 1 letter, 1–3 digits, i.e. A 1 to Z 999
• Group b (formerly Ib ): 2 letters, 1–2 digits, i.e. AA 1 to ZZ 99
• Group bc (formerly Ib and II ): 2 letters, 1–3 digits, i.e. AA 1 to ZZ 999
• Group c (formerly II ): 2 letters, 3 digits, i.e. AA 100 to ZZ 999
• Group d (formerly IIIa ): 1 letter, 4 digits, i.e. A 1000 to Z 9999
• Group e (formerly IIIb ): 2 letters, 4 digits, i.e. AA 1000 to ZZ 9999

For groups a and d, the only letter is given in the top row. The other groups usually have the first of the two letters there.

If the first letter (first letter) is in the second column, the second letters are given in the top row.

If the top row contains the digits from 1 to 9, these are the first digits of the numbers on the license plate.

• Beginning letter: First letter of the letter pair before the number
• Bst .: Letter in front of the number
• Letter pair: pair of letters in front of the number
