List of Hungarian Nobel Prize winners
Encouraged by Bertha von Suttner , the Nobel Prize has been financed since 1901 from the foundation funds of the Swedish chemist and industrialist Alfred Nobel (1833–1896) .
Due to the political situation in Hungary (racism between the world wars, Hungarian uprising of 1956), there were strong waves of emigration, especially from intellectual circles and Hungarians with a Jewish background, especially to America. Thus, the assignment to several states makes more sense. Many of those born in Hungary achieved their outstanding achievements abroad. Those who professed their Hungarian language and origin, at least also abroad, should be listed here, although they were no longer Hungarian citizens at the time of the award.
The following Hungarians received the award:
- Imre Kertész 2002
- George de Hevesy 1943
- George A. Olah 1994
- Eugene Paul Wigner 1963
- Dennis Gábor 1971
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
- John Harsanyi 1994
