This is a list of important terms used in fanfiction .

author

AN : Abbreviation for Author's Note . These are special comments from the author to readers. The author can tell about his everyday life or the development of the story or give a short summary. Greetings, dedications and thanks can often be found in AN. The AN belong at the end of a fanfic or a chapter.

Beta reader : a second person next to the author. It corresponds to an editor and is intended to point out errors in grammar and spelling to the author , but can also help with deficiencies in the content and suggest improvements. It is helpful if the beta reader is familiar with the fandom .

Denial : A character is in denial when they are in the denial phase. He does not accept certain events of the Canon or ignores them. A denial fic is therefore a story in which the author z. B. ignores the death of a character as if the (now denied) event never happened.

Abuse : A character is physically (sometimes sexually) abused.

AH : Abbreviation for All Human . All characters in the story are human.

Amnesia : A character loses part or all of its memory. This change is mostly used to achieve certain behaviors between characters or to create a new perspective on the other characters. No individual figure is introduced.

ANC : Abbreviation for Annoying New Character . This is a character that does not appear in the original. It is mostly about an important person or the protagonist of fanfic.

Animalized : The opposite of Humanized / Gijinka. Figures are originally people and are / become anthropomorphic beings.

  • In history they remain anthropomorphic beings, but the world around them is changing.
  • Or they become anthropomorphic beings through an incident (through magic or science).

CD : Abbreviation for character death . A character dies. Usually one of the main characters.

ER : Abbreviation for Established Relationship . The pairing has existed since the beginning of the story.

Gary-Stue : Male form of Mary-Sue.

Humanized : Also Gijinka (English Humanized and JP Gijinka). The opposite of Animalized. Figures of the original are not people, but anthropomorphic beings and are / become people.

  • In the story they are either human from the start, which changes the world around the characters in the story.
  • Or they become humans through an incident. That is up to the author, whether through magic or science.

IC : Abbreviation of In character . The opposite of OOC. The behavior of the characters corresponds to that of the original.

Mary Sue : Mary Sue is the female counterpart to Gary Stue, but is not only used for female persons. Mary Sue is a character who has special skills and / or who can easily manage difficult tasks straight away and with ease. Doesn't have to be a self insert. Mary Sues are not welcomed.

Mpreg : Abbreviation for male pregnancy .

Multiple partners : Several sexual partners (m / m / m, f / f / f, f / m / f, m / f / m).

NC : Abbreviation for New Character . A person who does not appear in the original takes on a role within the fanfic. Mostly protagonist.

OC : Abbreviation for Original Character or Own Character . Also common OFC - Original Female Character or OMC - Original Male Character . Describes self-invented characters that can appear in both free work and fanfiction. Also called FanCharacter.

OOC : Abbreviation for Out of Character . One or more people from the original series are behaving atypically.

Fan fiction

Canon : Fandom too. Is the original story for fanfiction.

Canon Pairing : Specifying a pairing. The couple already appears in the original series and is not destroyed within the fanfic.

Character code : Designates the letter abbreviations for pairings. Example: K / P for Katniss / Peeta

CHP : Abbreviation for Chapter (dt chapter.)

Cliffhanger : The story is interrupted at a very exciting point. The reader is left with it.

Don't like don't read : If you don't like it, don't read it. Or: leave only positive reviews or none at all.

EA : Abbreviation for Episode Addition . Stories that are linked to a special episode or chapter.

Epilogue : Sometimes forms the end of a fan fiction. Often takes place indefinitely after the actual story.

Fandom : Stands for fan community or original series of a fanfic. So the sentence The Fandom of Fanfic is Harry Potter only says that it is a fanfic about and about Harry Potter.

Fanon : Unverified but fandom recognized background of a fandom.

FF : Abbreviation for fan fiction

Flame : An unfair comment from a reader on fanfiction. Criticizes the author and not the story.

Format : layout and layout of the text. Number of characters per line, paragraphs, bold, italic or the division into chapters.

Header : Author, series, warnings, pairings, timeline and any number of chapters are listed in a header.

Kap : Also chapter. A section of the meaning of a fan fiction. Longer stories can be divided into chapters to get a preliminary opinion on the previous fanfiction from other fans.

Kinks / Squicks : likes and dislikes. If the reader likes something in particular, that's a kink, if he finds it repulsive, a squick.

Loli-con : A warning to the reader that the fanfiction is about pedophilia, in this case underage girls. The male counterpart is "Shota-con".

Missing Scene : Similar to EA with the difference that a Missing Scene takes place within an episode. This action can influence the rest of the story.

OTP : Abbreviation for One True Pairing . A fan's only favorite couple. Sometimes meant slightly obsessively, as it can denote Canon, Fanon or completely absurd couples.

Outlining : A rough and keyword-like list of scenes and actions which should later be used in a fan fiction. A reminder from the author.

Pairing : Describes a romantic relationship between two characters.

genre

Fanfiction genre

Crossover : The fan fiction is a mixture of two stories. The originals usually stay close together, very little is changed. Often only the different characters meet and experience adventures.

Fusion : Similar to the crossover, this genre is a mix of two or more series. But the series are linked even more closely. The plot of the story is a mixture of both. The characters of one series can also replace those of the second.

Lemon / Lime : The Japanese counterparts are hentai and ecchi . Fanfictions of this kind have an erotic content. Lime is the weakened version, in which there are indications of the sexual act. The lemon are much clearer in the graphic description. A Lemon doesn't have to be all about sex, though.

MST3K : Derivation of the television series Mysterie Science Theater 3000. In this genre (often poor quality) fanfictions by an author (with the author's permission) are provided with satirical and often malicious comments. The characters of the commented story are often included as if they were reading a story about themselves.

Multicrossover : The extended form of a crossover. This is where three or more fandoms meet.

Story genre

Action adventure: An adventure fan fiction. The aim of the characters in this genre is to get a task done. The adventure can be saving a virgin from a dragon, traveling through space or saving the world.

Drama : The story is a tragedy. The characters have to recover from severe blows of fate. Opposite of romance and humor .

Drabble : These fanfictions consist of about 100 words. But there is also double drabble (200 words), triple drabble (300 words) and quad drabble (400 words).

Horror : The genre targets goosebumps and anxiety. Everything that is scary is used.

Humor : Also called comedy . Easily digestible action that does not make great demands, but rather serves to amuse the reader. Everything from subtle jokes to embarrassing situations to slapstick is processed.

Crime : Also referred to as a police story. The plot consists of solving a theft or murder. The plot is not immediately visible and the reader is encouraged to guess. Often it is only at the end that it is resolved who the perpetrator is.

Mystery : The story is about mysterious occurrences. These can be ghosts, vampires or the like.

Story style

Altraverse : Also called Alternate Universe . Before the start of the original series (film, book or manga) there was a change in this fanfiction genre. This changed the whole of later history. The action can take place in a completely different world, but it can also be almost identical. Usually the changes get bigger and bigger.

Anxiety : These stories are grim. They are intended to scare the reader and can be terrifying.

Bad language : There is a lot of cursing in history and harsh expressions are used.

Badfic : Bad fan fiction. Mostly intended by the author.

Case-Fic : The story deals with the investigation of a case: e.g. B. Murder or a medical case.

Challenge (dt. Challenge ): The stories must meet certain requirements. For example, an object has to be found and it has to play an important role, or a series of objects (a list). But it can also be that a certain sentence or a situation has to occur. But it is also possible that a number of things are not allowed to occur.

Crackfic : Or acidfic. A form of fan fiction in which the author randomly moves his characters somewhere, in senseless situations, in crazy constellations or simply everything OOC. The reader should feel that the author was on drugs while writing. The pairings in these stories are just as implausible.

Curtain-Fic : Refers to stories whose plot mainly consists of characters having domestic chores to do. A pair who spends the day at home can also be shown. In fandoms, whose characters are on the move a lot, curtain fic can also be used to describe a story in which the characters become more or less voluntarily settled.

DF : Abbreviation for Dark Fic . A story with a dark, mysterious or terrifying plot. Often the antagonists / villains of the original are the protagonists, or one of the "good guys" joins them. If in the table of contents by Dark! made clear.

Dub-con : Abbreviation for dubious consent (dt. Dubious consent ). These are stories where one or more characters' consent to sexual activity is ambiguous.

Filk : Kind of musical comedy . The author rewraps a song to fit the fandom. Can also be poems. However, it has to be differentiated from a songfic, as ideas from the original are also introduced there.

First Time : The first love and / or the first time.

Fluff : The story has an excess of harmony and idyll. Everyone loves each other and nobody does anything to anyone.

Gen : The stories don't focus on pairings. Sexual acts are also not in the foreground.

Het : Straight too. In these stories, the pairings are exclusively straight.

MMFF : Abbreviation for hands-on fan fiction . A style for fanfiction that several people write on. The author, under whom the story runs, provides a scenario and introduces people or allows those involved to design people according to a specific profile. In addition, the author can always turn to those involved. So they then "write" a story together.

Musefic : A fanfic in which the author conducts dialogues with his muse: z. B. with his favorite character or an indefinite power that speaks to him out of nowhere.

Non-con : Abbreviation for non-consent ( no consent ). These are stories in which one or more characters have not given their consent to sexual acts, i.e. people are raped.

Slash : There are homosexual pairings in these fanfics.

One-shot : A fanfic that consists of only one chapter, which is self-contained and has an end. Is usually longer than a spamfic and, in contrast to this, has a complete plot.

space and time

AU : Abbreviation for Alternate Universe , alternative reality and parallel universes. The characters in a story are torn from their actual surroundings.
