Lithuanian Youth Day

The Lithuanian Youth Day ( lit. Lietuvos jaunimo dienos , LJD ) is an event of the Lithuanian Roman Catholic Church . The meeting for all teenagers and young adults from Lithuania and Lithuanians from all over the world. The youth day is organized by the youth chaplaincy at the Lithuanian Bishops' Conference and by the respective host diocese every 3 years. The meetings have their origins in an initiative of Pope John Paul II , who invited to Rome in 1984 for the “International Youth Jubilee” ( World Youth Day ). The program of the Lithuanian Youth Day includes workshops, worship and the liturgy, the pilgrim procession through the city and other events.

The first Lithuanian Youth Day took place in 1997. That was a trip from Vilnius from the Gate of Dawn ( Aušros Vartai ) to Trakai . There were several hundreds of participants. In 2000 the event was called “Between Heaven and Earth” (“Tarp Dangaus ir Žemės”) and took place in Vilnius for 3 days. 5000 Lithuanian youth took part.

July 2004 two-day LJD began in the west-north town of Šiauliai and ended on the Hill of Crosses ( Kryžių kalnas ). The theme was “I cannot be quiet” (“Negaliu tylėti”). 5000 Lithuanian youth took part.

In 2007 the LJD found the topic “Courage! That's me ”(“ Drąsos! Tai aš ”) from June 30th to July 1st in the Lithuanian port city of Klaipėda (in the city scene“ Vasaros Estrada ”) with 6000 participants. There was also a German youth group from the Archdiocese of Cologne .

From 26 June to 27 June 2010, the LJD found on "Get up and go" ( "Kelkis ir eik") in Panevezys instead. The final fair took place in the Cido arena .

From June 28th to June 30th 2013 LJD took place in Kaunas on the topic “I call you friends!” ( Jus aš draugais vadinu!; Jn 15,1-17). The final mass took place in the Žalgirio Arena .
