LiteStep is an alternative user interface ( shell ) for Microsoft Windows that is developed under the GPL . The shell is thus a replacement for the standard functions from Windows 95.

It was inspired by AfterStep , which in turn was inspired by NeXTStep . LiteStep was originally developed as a closed source project by Francis Gastellu until April 1998 (version b23). A new development team then rewrote it. LiteStep is one of the oldest Windows shell alternatives. It is based on the idea of a narrow core and a large number of loadable configurable modules ( DLLs ). Thanks to this high level of flexibility, each user can adapt the system to their needs.

The further development of LiteStep has intermittent interruptions due to the composition of the development team. However, the program is continuously being developed.

The level of awareness of LiteStep is much lower in Germany than in countries such as England, France and the USA. This is due on the one hand to the lack of well-developed communities and on the other hand to the lack of German documentation on LiteStep so far.
