Little India (Neighborhood)

The name Little India ( Hindi : प्रवासी भारतीय [Pravāsī Bhāratīya]) generally refers to neighborhoods and enclaves in a city in which predominantly people of Indian descent are concentrated, live there, do their business (especially special clothing, food including spices, restaurants etc.). The Hindi term “Pravāsī Bhāratīya” roughly means “Indian migrant”. Such neighborhoods, which can be found around the world outside of India, have become a popular tourist destination.

The destination countries of the Indians who emigrated from India were different. In early times, Indian traders settled in countries bordering the Indian and Pacific Oceans. During the colonial period, especially after the ban on the slave trade, there was an enormous demand for labor in the - not only British - colonies, which also resulted in a wave of emigration from India to the colonies.
