Liutswind

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Liutswind (also Liutwind, Liutswinda; † before 891) was the lover of the later King Karlmann around 850 and through him became the mother of Emperor Arnulf .

It is only known because on March 9, 891, Arnulf donated the Erding farm to the church in Salzburg , which Liutswind had as a fief , and named it. It is unlikely that she received this farm before the death of Karlmann's father Ludwig the German in 876. She had her widow's residence in Moosburg on the Isar , where she earned her living from properties in the surrounding area and from Moosburg Abbey.

The origin of Liutswind has not been proven and is therefore controversial in research. In Arnulf's document she is called nobilissima femina , "which has helped her in modern research to a hypothetical classification under the Liutpoldinger , but in any case denotes an origin that was completely befitting of the bride of a Carolingian prince." It must be taken into account that This classification is based on the one hand on the first syllable Liut- of their name, on the other hand on the preference with which Emperor Arnulf treated the Liutpoldinger family.
