content

18-year-old factory worker Liza Kemp lives with her mother, a 65-year-old widowed drinker, in the London borough of Lambeth. Liza rejects the serious marriage proposal of her young, awkward but rock solid friend Tom and falls in love with Jim Blakeston, who is at least twice his age. The married father of five children knows exactly how to make a lover docile. Still, Liza is beaming with happiness and bliss. The summer of love is drawing to a close. Liza feels pregnant. Jim can't bring himself to leave because of his beloved children Lizas. The numerous rendezvous of the lovers had not gone unnoticed by the curious neighborhood for several months. Jim's wife, Mrs. Blakeston, a gross person expecting the sixth child, has long since smelled a match. She puts Liza on the street and beats her half to death, surrounded by a sensational crowd. Liza dies a little later as a result of the unequal fight.

shape

Somerset Maugham structured his first novel simply. The author is aware - he has not yet found the right tone. So he asks the esteemed reader to think his own way when it comes to the "softened" rendering of the crude dialogues of his characters from the London workforce. And when Mrs. Kemp - that is Liza's mother - repeats herself constantly in her constant tirades, then the young author gives up.

interpretation

The social criticism is obvious. For example, the London police have been criticized for staying out of brawls on the street.
