In May 2002 the five railway lines Hillerød – Frederiksværk – Hundested Jernbane (Frederiksværkbanen, HFHJ), Gribskovbanen (GDS), Hornbækbanen (HHGB), Nærumbanen (LNJ) and Østbanen (ØSJS) were taken over. The trains and the infrastructure of the predecessor companies went to the company Hovedstadens Lokalbaner A / S , from which Lokalbanen A / S rents the trains.

The freight train traffic was stopped in 2006.

With the establishment of the new company Regionstog A / S on January 1, 2009, the Østbanen line was spun off from the Lokalbanen company and transferred to Regionstog's ownership.

On July 1, 2015, Regionstog and Lokalbanen merged to form the new company Lokaltog , which comprises all former private railways on Zealand and Lolland.
