The Lonely Rock (from English lonely , lonely , lonely, alone ' ) is a 7 m high cliff rock off the east coast of James Ross Island in the Antarctic Weddell Sea . It lies east of Ula Point on the western edge of the Erebus and Terror Gulf .
The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey mapped it in 1945. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee originally named it Lone Rock in 1949 , but changed this name in 1963 to avoid confusion with Lone Rock in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands .
