Long-term Predicted Excitation Coding

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

LPEC is a proprietary codec developed by Sony for lossy audio data compression and usually has the file extension ".msv" or ".dvf"

The format is used in some digital dictation devices from Sony. It was primarily designed for voice recordings in low quality and with low bit rates , but with the highest available bit rate of 128kbps it is also suitable for music recording. The sound quality is comparable to other, current lossy compression methods, such as MP3 or Vorbis .

With the exception of dictation machines, the format is largely unknown. Virtually no information about LPEC is available on the Internet either. The only software available for creating, editing and playing back is the "Digital Voice Editor" supplied by Sony with the supported dictation devices and a playback codec for Windows Media Player .
