Long John

Long John

The Long John is a special type of transport bike .

In contrast to other bicycles, the Long John has a low-lying loading area between the head tube and the front wheel, which can be loaded with up to 100 kg. The fork is connected to the handlebar tube via a handlebar under the loading area and a steering lever

Long Johns were probably first made in Denmark in the late 1920s and early 1930s. In the decades that followed, production was primarily in the hands of Smith & Co in Odense , which Long Johns sold under its house brand SCO. The Long Johns were also offered by Smith & Co under other brands, e.g. B. URANIA. Smith & Co later renamed Everton Smith and was dissolved in 1997. With interruptions, the Long John was produced by Monark in Sweden until 2009 .

Because of their relatively high weight, Long Johns are mainly used in flat areas and especially in Copenhagen and Amsterdam . More and more companies and private individuals are now building Long Johns. Building instructions for these cargo bikes, which consist of a combination of commercially available bikes and self-made parts, can also be found on the Internet.
