Longhill Mill

The Longhill Mill is a former watermill in the Scottish village of Lhanbryde in the Council Area Moray . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

A mill has been recorded at the site since 1733. On a map from the mid-19th century it was shown as a flour mill. The miller's house, which is preserved today, was built around this time. The mill had a mill pond from which the water was fed to the water wheel . In the late 19th century, the mill was destroyed by fire. Today's Longhill Mill was built on the same site in 1891. It was operated as a flour mill until 1969. In 2003 the Longhill Mill was restored and converted into a residential building.

description

The Longhill Mill is near the Longhill Burn stream on the northern edge of Lhanbryde. The two-story watermill has a T-shaped floor plan. A one-story extension continues on the southeast side. The masonry of the mill is made of quarry stone, which was cut into unequal blocks and built into layered masonry. A first ventilation tower rises from the slate-covered gable roof .

Three pairs of millstones are installed in a row. An overshot water wheel with a diameter of around 3.7 meters is installed for propulsion. The 1.4 meter wide wooden wheel has eight steel spokes.
