Loomio is free software , suitable to support groups in the collaborative decision-making process. In the web application , users can start discussions and make suggestions. If the discussions trigger a suggestion, the group receives feedback in the form of an updateable pie graphic.

Loomio was written by a core group of software developers in Wellington , New Zealand. However, people from all over the world have donated time and money to make this new platform possible.

In 2014, a crowdfunding campaign raised over $ 100,000 to develop Loomio 1.0. Loomio 1.0 supports mobile phone use and contains other improvements.

Loomio is financed through contracts with governments and companies, as well as donations from users.

history

Loomio developed out of the Occupy movement . The first prototype was launched in 2012. It was used in the Occupy movement in New Zealand. After that, the Loomio team decided it would be easier to give everyone a voice with online software, which led to the launch of Loomio 1.0. Since the launch of Loomio 1.0, the hand signals of the Occupy movement are no longer used in the interface. Since then, Loomio has developed into a social enterprise, as a "platform co-op".

functionality

The most important organizational structure is the group . A group consists of members who have access rights to this group. Groups can be public or private, which allows for both privacy and transparency.

Within a group, members create discussions on specific topics. During a discussion, members can post comments and make proposals.

Proposals require member feedback on a specific statement, with options to agree, disagree, abstain, and block, which is a strong denial.

reception

Loomio was used by Wellington City Council for discussion with citizens.

The Greek Pirate Party used Loomio to create 461 groups covering 18 departments, 13 regions of Greece, 23 prefectures, and hundreds of counties and parishes.

The Internet Party of New Zealand used Loomio to strategize for the 2014 election.

El Partido Pirata de Chile adapted Loomio in its own version as Lumio , as a slightly modified translation in Spanish.

Loomio won the MIX Prize Digital Freedom Challenge in April 2014.
