Peter Elster (baptized July 1, 1637 in Neudek ; buried April 30, 1704 in Platten ) was a Bohemian entrepreneur, paint maker, blue paint factory owner and one of the rebel leaders in the North Bohemian peasant uprising of 1680.

Life

Peter Elster was the son of the master wire drawer on the lower wire mill at Neudek Jobst Elster († 1669) and his wife Kunigunda († 1674), possibly daughter of the master wire drawer Jacob Lerch († 1635). The family moved from the Harz in Braunschweig to Neudek in Bohemia at the end of the 16th century, where they traditionally worked as masterminds for generations . His great-grandfather was the furnace master and iron smelter Claus Elster († 1611). Elster grew up with ten siblings in the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War . He learned the trade of butcher and gained citizenship in his hometown. His first marriage was in 1661, the daughter of the Neudek mayor and shift supervisor Georg Stutzig and half-sister of the border customs collector and mountain tithe von Platten Johann Putz .

When the unrest spread to Neudek in the north Bohemian peasant uprising of 1680, Elster joined the rebels. In addition to his brother-in-law, he is named as one of the leaders of the rebels in Neudek , alongside his brother-in-law, the bailiff and landlord Georg Bernhard Stutzig , the tailor Hans Christoph Dürrschmidt and the tailor Georg Haussner. Despite a warning from Count Humprecht Johann Czernin , they resisted the military and fled armed into the neighboring mountains, from where they refused to submit to any form of submission. After being captured, Elster may have received the death penalty but was pardoned. According to the imperial decree of April 7, 1680, Neudek had lost all city privileges until further notice and despite humble letters from the citizens, the citizenship was revoked.

In 1684 he married the widow of the mountain master of Platten, Peter Kuhn, and moved with his family to neighboring Platten. Since then Elster has been working as a paint maker and trader in Breitenbach on the border with Saxony, where he ran a paint mill that his wife brought into the marriage. After his death in 1704, his eldest son Christian Elster took over the plant. It remained in the family until it was closed in the 19th century.
