The Lottery House (2011)

The Lottehaus is the birthplace and - until her marriage - the residence (1753–73) of Charlotte Buff in Wetzlar and today's museum. It is located at Lottestraße 8-10, 35578 Wetzlar.

The lottery house originally belonged to the branch of the Teutonic Order in Wetzlar. This was set up as "Haus Wetzlar" in 1285 and expanded by several buildings over the years. The house itself was built in 1653 in half-timbered construction as a residence for the administrator of the order's court. Heinrich Adam Buff moved into the house in 1740 after he had entered the service of the Teutonic Order as administrator. His daughter Charlotte, after whom the house is named today, was born there on January 11, 1753. After Charlotte became famous through her acquaintance with Goethe and as a role model for the figure "Lotte" in his novel Die Leiden des Junge Werther (1774), the citizens of Wetzlar set up a memorial in the house for her in 1863.

Today the house is one of the museums of the city of Wetzlar and houses a permanent exhibition. This contains pictures and information about the Buff family as well as furniture and everyday objects from the 18th century. In addition, three exhibition rooms are dedicated to the work of Goethe and the (contemporary) reception of Werther.

The Jerusalem House in Wetzlar is another museum dedicated to Goethe and Werther.
