Jerusalem House

Jerusalem House is another name for the house at Schillerplatz 5 in Wetzlar (formerly Winklersches Haus).

In 1772 the Brunswick Legation Secretary Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem shot himself here in a two-room apartment on the second floor . Goethe , who knew him personally and was doing an internship at the Imperial Court of Justice in Wetzlar , set a literary monument for him as Werther in The Sorrows of Young Werther . The apartment is now a memorial with historical furniture and documents.

The Goethe Werther Collection is housed in the Jerusalem House . The special library strives for the greatest possible completeness in the documentation of Goethe's novel Die Leiden des Junge Werther and not only keeps valuable contemporary German editions of the novel ready, but also collects new editions in every imaginable language. In Lottehaus different editions are on display.

The building is a cultural monument due to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .
