Lover is a village in the English county of Wiltshire , about twelve kilometers south-east of Salisbury , on the border with Hampshire . It belongs to the civil parish Redlynch, about 1.6 kilometers away, and is within the boundaries of the New Forest National Park . Lover was once called Warminster Green, but has been known by its current name since 1876, which probably originated from Lower Redlynch.

The village, consisting of a few houses and around 150 inhabitants, is grouped around a triangle of streets. The village church of St Mary was built in 1837. Around 1839 Lover got a National School . It was replaced by a new building in 1878, later converted into a Church of England primary school operated by volunteer teachers and closed in 2006; the building has been owned by the village community since 2016. There used to be a pub and a village shop as well. Since Lover is also the English word for lover, the place-name signs are stolen again and again.

Mailbox in lover

Lover has become known nationwide through his greeting card campaign, which has been organized on Valentine's Day for decades . A special postmark then bore the text St Valentines Day Lover Salisbury . Since there has not been a permanent post office there since 2008, the campaign only revived in 2017, supported by the voluntary commitment of the villagers. The special cancellation with the text Sent from Lover (ambiguous: Sent from Lover / Sent from Lover) advertises Lover as the “Most Romantic Village in the World. Especially on Valentine's Day "( The most romantic village in the world. Especially for Valentines ). The proceeds of the cards, which are limited to 8000 pieces, designed by the children of the village and hand-stamped by the Cupids ("messengers of love"), will go this year to the renovation of the old school into a community house with a daycare center.
