Low profile

Low profile card with extension for normal height

In computer technology, the Low Profile PCI Card” is a form factor for PCI or PCIe plug-in cards that is used in certain housings with limited space.

In 19 ″ technology, there are e.g. B. 2 U housing in low-profile design, in which the expansion cards are installed vertically and therefore may only have a lower overall height. Even in some Mini-PC cases, only low-profile plug-in cards can be installed.

Depending on the manufacturer and model, there are special low-profile sheets for controller, graphics or other expansion cards that can be screwed onto the cards in place of the normal slot brackets. Some models also have special low-profile versions of the cards with an adapted circuit board layout. The reduced overall height is often accompanied by a flatter design of the components such as capacitors on the circuit board .

The term low profile is also used in a context that has nothing to do with PCI cards. It is also used for the height of hard disks to show that the models are suitable for flat housings. The widespread 3.5 ″ hard disks are usually low profile hard disks with a height of 1 ″. The full height of 1.63 ″ is rarely used in current devices.

Another example are main memory modules , the variants of which with a low overall height promote the airflow in 1U servers.
