Mponela is a city at 1200 m altitude in the Dowa district in the central region of Malawi , 60 km north of Lilongwe , with a population of 24,453 people (2018 census). It is located on the paved road Lilongwe – Mzuzu , is connected to the electricity and telephone network and has an air runway.

Mponela is an agrarian city with no tourist significance. In Mponela, the government runs a nutrition center that feeds 700 children a day and provides shelter for 50 children.
